Green IT: Saving the Planet One Byte at a Time

Written by Alessia Gaspodini | Apr 17, 2023 1:58:50 PM

In today's digital age, our reliance on technology has increased exponentially. From smartphones to laptops, servers to data centers, the amount of energy required to power these devices is massive. Did you know that the energy used by a single Google search is equivalent to turning on a 60W light bulb for 17 seconds?

According to the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), the ICT sector, which includes IT hardware, software, and services, accounts for approximately 2% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This may seem like a small percentage, but it is equivalent to the aviation industry's GHG emissions. Moreover, with the increasing use of technology in various industries, this percentage is expected to rise by 21% by 2030, which is equivalent to the total carbon footprint of the United States and China combined.

It cannot be denied that ICT has had an impact on global warming and it is clear that urgent action is needed to address this global issue. The Earth's temperature is rising at an alarming rate (the five-year period from 2017-2021 is set to be the hottest on record), and the consequences are dire, from increased poverty to the extinction of many species. The World Bank estimates that climate change could push over 100 million people into extreme poverty by 2030 and according to a report by the United Nations, about 1 million species are currently at risk of extinction due to climate change, habitat loss, and other human activities. But there is good news, too. By adopting sustainable practices, we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint and help to mitigate the impact of global warming. And lower these numbers. This is where green IT comes into play.

Green IT has a significant impact on global warming

Green IT is the practice of designing, developing, using, and disposing of technology in an environmentally sustainable manner. It aims to reduce the carbon footprint and other negative environmental impacts associated with information technology (IT) operations. Why is green IT important for global warming?

By using energy-efficient technologies, reducing waste, and using renewable energy sources, businesses can lower their GHG emissions and reduce their impact on the environment. For example, using energy-efficient servers and data centers can save up to 80% of the energy used by traditional servers and reduce GHG emissions by up to 50%.

The Trends Wordcloud

Here's the Trends Wordcloud generated by SCOUT, our AI-powered Future Intelligence platform. It displays trends and emerging technologies related to our query (in this case, Green Computing) and highlights how it can contribute to combating climate change. Below are some highlights on how green IT can impact on GHG emissions and global warming:

Energy Efficiency: One of the biggest sources of GHG emissions associated with IT operations comes from the energy required to power and cool servers and data centers. By using energy-efficient technologies, such as low-power processors, efficient power supplies, and advanced cooling systems, businesses can significantly reduce their energy consumption and GHG emissions.

Renewable Energy: Another way to reduce the carbon footprint of IT operations is to use renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power. By using renewable energy to power data centers and other IT infrastructure, businesses can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and lower their GHG emissions.

Waste Reduction: IT equipment can generate a significant amount of electronic waste, which can be harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly. Green IT promotes the recycling, refurbishment, and safe disposal of electronic devices to reduce waste and pollution.

Sustainable procurement: Green IT also involves considering the environmental impact of IT equipment during the procurement process. This can involve selecting equipment with high energy efficiency ratings, choosing products made from sustainable materials, and evaluating the environmental impact of suppliers.

Telecommuting: Remote working or telecommuting can reduce the carbon footprint of employees by reducing their need to commute to work. It also reduces the need for office space and the associated energy consumption.

How Can We All Contribute to Green IT?

As individuals, we can also contribute to green IT and help reduce our carbon footprint. Here are some things we can do:

Choose Energy-Efficient Devices: When purchasing electronic devices, opt for energy-efficient models. Look for devices with Energy Star ratings or EPEAT certifications.

Reduce Energy Consumption: Turn off devices when not in use, enable power-saving modes, and unplug chargers when not in use.

Support Green Initiatives: Support companies that prioritize sustainability and use renewable energy sources.

Dispose of E-waste Responsibly: Recycle, donate, or sell old electronic devices instead of throwing them away.

Use cloud computing: Cloud computing can reduce energy consumption by up to 95%.

At MAPEGY, we are committed to driving growth and sustainable development.
At MAPEGY we recognize the importance of adopting environmentally friendly practices in our business operations and believe that it is crucial for all individuals and businesses to do the same. One of our MAPEGY values is: "We are guided by our purpose to drive growth and sustainable development". This is why we run 100% green-energy powered applications, are a remote first company, support a BYOD policy (Bring your own device), print as little as possible (are fully digital), or use virtual and shared resources. By implementing green IT practices, we can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and play a significant role in mitigating the effects of global warming. Let us all take responsibility and prioritize sustainability in our actions for a better future.
